AUBURN — A.R. Building Co. confirms it will replace the apartment building destroyed in a massive fire Sept. 8 at Mount Auburn Apartments on Mt. Auburn Ave.
Director of Development Emily Mitchell offered no information about a schedule, cost of the damage or the investigation into the cause.
Crews were at the site Friday cleaning up the debris.
Auburn Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Fifield confirmed the builder had been cleared to clean the site and begin construction.
Fifield said the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives is leading the investigation into the cause and is assisted by the Auburn Fire Department.
At Monday’s City Council meeting, Assistant City Manager Denis D’Auteuil said city staff met with the development group who said they will replace the four-story apartment building. A second four-story building was damaged, but is salvageable, according to Fifield. The developer will replace siding and some windows on the side closest to the burned building, he said.
D’Auteuil said the developer plans to begin taking leasing applications for the standing building in the spring, as construction on the new one moves ahead.
The building that stands was nearing completion while the other was several months behind.
In all, 102 market-rate apartments are planned. The developer has the apartment complex information available online at mt.auburn-apts.com.
