BRIDGTON — Gordon Smith, Maine’s director of opioid response, plans to speak to Bridgton-Lake Region Rotarians and guests on Thursday, Oct. 24.
He will arrive at 7:30 a.m. at the Bridgton Alliance Church, 368 Harrison Road. Doors open at 7:15 a.m.; coffee will be served.

Smith, appointed by Gov. Janet Mills in 2019, is responsible for coordinating and directing Maine’s response to the opioid crisis, including prescriber education and reduction of opioid prescribing, prevention and treatment of substance use disorder, and harm reduction strategies.
He stepped down as executive vice president of the Maine Medical Association in 2019, where he had served in that role since 1993 and where he began as general counsel in 1981, according to a news release from Carol Madsen with the rotary.
He is a past chairman of the American Society of State Medical Association Counsel, a nationwide group of 140 attorneys representing medical associations. Smith has also served as chairman of the American Medical Association/State Medical Society Litigation Center, the Maine Health Data Organization and the Advocacy Resource Center of the American Medical Association.
