OXFORD — A fire Sunday evening destroyed a garage on the shore of Thompson Lake at 123 Beechwoods Road.

Fire crews responded at approximately 9 p.m. Sunday, finding the garage fully involved.

A neighbor, Raymond Lafreniere, who lives three homes away, said he was watching television when he heard a noise that sounded like the back gate of a dump truck opening. Wondering who was doing that at that time of night, Lafreniere stepped outside and saw the orange glow of flames.

He noted that there were two propane tanks near the house that were venting gas.

“It looked like a rocket ship had taken off,” Lafreniere said.

Oxford Fire Chief Ashley Wax-Armstrong said there were no injuries. Two vehicles in the garage were destroyed, she said.

Lafreniere said firefighters did a good job getting the flames under control. While the garage was destroyed, the home sustained minimal damage.

“The houses are pretty close together and we’re surrounded by forests,” he said. “Things can be pretty tricky.”

Among the departments providing mutual assistance were fire departments from Paris, Norway, Poland and Otisfield.
