Frank M. Blauvelt Sr.

OTISFIELD – Frank M. Blauvelt Sr., 87, of Otisfield, passed away in his home on Oct. 19, 2024. He was born July 1, 1937, in Manhattan, NY, the only child of Frank Blauvelt and Jennifer Elizabeth (Mawson) Blauvelt.

Frank was raised in the city attending schools there and graduated from Collegiate School. He later graduated from Cortland State University majoring in physical education. He later received his Master’s Degree at Syracuse university before pursuing a career in education. Frank taught school in New Jersey before relocating to Maine where he taught Elementary School for over 30 years in the Lake Region School District SAD 61.

Frank Developed his love for Maine in his youth attending the former Great Oaks Camp in Otisfield. While at camp he continued his love of sports and developed an interest in horses and horseback riding. He attended camp there for several years and eventually became a camp counselor there instructing water sports and horseback riding.

The Blauvelt Family moved from their Morristown, NJ home to Maine in the fall of 1968 and spent the winter in a cabin on Long Lake before moving into the home in Otisfield in the summer of 1969. In addition to his teaching career in, Frank also was a longtime staff member and eventual Program Director at Camp Agawam in Raymond for over 20 years.

Frank became interested in volunteer firefighting while in New Jersey, and brought that same interest with him to Otisfield. He became a member of the Otisfield Volunteer Fire Department and soon after became Chief. He has been credited by the town for revitalizing a dwindling department and oversaw the construction of a new Fire Station and the purchase of newer, more modern equipment. After serving many roles within the department he retired in 2015. Frank was also instrumental in the development of the Oxford-Otisfield Rescue which began in 1976. He became Chief of the service there and served many years as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Frank became an active member of the East Otisfield Baptist Church serving as a Deacon while also cooking for dinners and assisting in the operation of the food pantry. He was also a big part of the community lunch program shopping, cooking and providing whatever he could for help.

Frank fell in love with Maine and Otisfield at a young age and that never left him. He was both honored and thrilled to be the Grand Marshall of the 4th of July Parade in Otisfield this past summer, a wonderful tribute to him from a grateful and loving town. Always wanting and willing to help a neighbor or friend in need in any way he could. He will be missed greatly by family, friends and the community.

He is survived by his daughter Karen Blauvelt of Portland, son, Frank M. Blauvelt Jr. “Buddy” of Otisfield; and his granddaughter Kiana Blauvelt of Otisfield.

A graveside committal service will be held at the South Otisfield Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, 2024. A larger celebration to honor Frank’s life will be held later with the time and date to be announced.
