WINTHROP — Monmouth overcame a halftime deficit with a pair of second-half goals to beat Hall-Dale 2-1 in the Mountain Valley Conference boys soccer championship game at Charlie’s Field.
The Bulldogs went up 1-0 in the first half on a nicely placed shot Jaxon Olson.
In the second half, Mustangs freshman Zane Foyt was fouled inside the goal box, earning a penalty kick that his holder brother, Rory Foyt, capitalized on to even the game at 1-1.
Nine minutes later, sophomore Jake Harmon scored an unassisted goal to give the Mustangs the lead.
Monmouth goalie Lewis Lamoreau stopped five shots, while Hall-Dale’s Landon Gilbert stopped eight.
Monmouth (11-2-1), the defending Class D state champion, will be the second seed in the D South playoffs. The Mustangs will host No. 3 Buckfield (4-6-4) on Friday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m.
Hall-Dale (12-2) finished the regular season as the top seed in Class C South and will host No. 8 Mountain Valley (0-11-3) in a quarterfinal next week.
