100 Years Ago: 1924

“So immoral” has the high school and public dance become in the opinion of the authorities of Jordan High School of Lewiston that the faculty through Miss Mary Leonard, dean of girls, appealed to the girl students at assembly Friday to launch a movement to “clean up the dance.” The students promised their whole-hearted cooperation.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Mr. and Mrs. Philip Cheney of One McSullivan Street, Lewiston, were honored recently at Happy Jack’s Restaurant. The occasion marked Mr. Cheney’s retirement from the National Biscuit Company after more than 25 years of service. He was presented with a gift of silver dollars enclosed in a pair of bronzed golf shoes.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Families huddled against the rain in Sunnyside Park Saturday as they listened to a man whose words brightened their day.

Next summer, he told them, Lewiston’s children can again go to camp for free.

Not only that, said Owen Wells, but the program looks secure for years to come, and probably will be expanded to include at least one more community next year.

Mothers applauded. Fathers applauded. Children who went to camps this summer applauded.

They’d come out in the steady rain to thank the Portland-based Libra Foundation for putting up the $1.2 million for the new program.
