The Jay-Niles Memorial Library will host dinosaur themed activities for the month of November.  Submitted photo

JAY — The Jay-Niles Memorial Library is celebrating the month of November in a very prehistoric way… dinosaurs. The library will participate in Dinovember, a month dedicated to dinosaurs.

Dinovember was created by Refe and Susan Tuma in 2012. Every morning for the month of November, their children noticed that their toy dinosaurs had wreaked havoc around the house the night before. Very similar to the popular Christmas elf on the shelf, every morning showed a different scene, dinosaurs ripping apart cereal boxes to eat, turning the kitchen sink into a giant bubble bath, or even playing their board games.

The Tumas created the project to protect their children’s sense of wonder and imagination in a time where technology has become a huge part of everyone’s lives. “In a time when the answers to all the world’s questions are a web-search away, we want our kids to experience a little mystery,” Refe Tuma said in a blog post.

Now, Dinovember has grown and spread to home, classrooms, and libraries all over. There is even a published series written by the Tumas called “What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night.”

The Jay-Niles Memorial Library is participating in Dinovember with a month filled with free dino-themed activities, beginning with a month-long dino footprint scavenger hunt and dino crafts. Every Friday this November, there will be a Dinosaur story time at 10:30 a.m. as well.
