Police officers on duty at Ward Six, Lewiston, told a reporter that conditions there for voting were deplorable. Ward officials were forced to wear heavy coats to keep warm.
Ward Six is situated in L’Heureux’s grain store on lower Lisbon street and is not heated.
Women working in the ward headquarters found conditions very unsuitable.
50 Years Ago: 1974
Independent James B. Longley, running on a platform of fiscal responsibility, swept to a gubernatorial victory in one of the most stunning political upsets in Maine history.
With 538 of Maine’s 645 precincts reporting, Longley had outpolled his closest party opponent, Democrat George J. Mitchell, by 98,728 to 87,040.
“The people of Maine have again dared to be first to lead, and to send out a message that will be heard around the country,” Longley said in a statement issued from his campaign headquarters in Auburn.
25 Years Ago: 1999
Police arrested a 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl at Lewiston High School Friday morning in connection with bomb threats that closed the school the previous four days.
“More arrests are imminent,” said police Sgt. Tom Avery. He wouldn’t say how many.
