COUNTY — Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) have played a vital role in environmental stewardship in the U.S. since their inception. Their history dates back to the 1930s during the Dust Bowl, a period of severe drought and massive dust storms that devastated American farmlands. In response to this crisis, the Soil Conservation Act of 1935 was passed. This led to the establishment of the Soil Conservation Service (now known as the Natural

Resources Conservation Service, or NRCS) to address the erosion problems and promote sustainable land management practices. The creation of SWCDs emerged from this movement because, from the beginning, it was recognized that for conservation efforts to be successful, the community needed to be involved. Districts are typically organized at the county level and are designed to be non-regulatory. We’re not out to get you in trouble! We are here to help landowners and municipalities implement best management practices for soil and water conservation.

The Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District has a long and proud history of serving our western Maine community through education and technical assistance. For many years, our organization has been at the forefront of preserving the natural resources that define our region, including the beautiful lakes and forests we are known for.

We cannot do it all on our own. The success of the conservation district depends on the input, dedication, and vision of passionate board members. We are actively seeking new members to join our small but mighty team. As a board member, you can contribute to strategic decision-making, help guide the district, and ensure that we continue to serve the county effectively. We meet on the second Wednesday of every month from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

We are looking for board members who:
• Are interested in natural resources -soil and water, forestry, agriculture, native plants and wildlife, etc.
• Want to help promote and support the programs of Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District
• Are invested in conserving Maine’s natural heritage

Board members must be:
• 18 years or older
• A resident registered voter and reside in Oxford County
