Robert Shetterly, right, speaks to visitors Friday at his exhibit “Americans Who Tell the Truth” at the Bates Mill Atrium in Lewiston. The full collection, displayed for only the second time in one location, features portraits of teachers, activists, veterans and others who have confronted significant challenges. Each painting includes a quote from its subject, addressing themes of dissent, democracy and the responsibilities of citizenship. On Dec. 4, Sun Journal Executive Editor Judith Meyer will join Shetterly for a discussion about truth-telling and citizenship. The event, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bates Mill Atrium, will offer further insights into the stories and lessons behind the portraits. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
