AUBURN — Wet roads were blamed for a three-vehicle pileup that left one driver with injuries early Friday morning on the Maine Turnpike in Auburn.

The 12:30 a.m. wreck at mile marker 75 northbound left the turnpike reduced to one lane in that area for 2 1/2 hours.

Police said the driver of a passenger vehicle headed north appeared to have lost control and spun out before coming to rest in the roadway. That vehicle was then struck by a box truck, which then skidded into a tractor-trailer, police said.

“After striking the tractor-trailer unit, the box truck rolled over the guardrail coming to rest partially down an embankment,” according to a Maine State Police press release.

The driver of the box truck was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with injuries described as non-life-threatening. There were no other injuries, police said.

Police did not identify any of the drivers involved in the wreck.

Police said speed and wet road conditions were contributing factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Maine Turnpike Authority, State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and the Auburn Fire Department.
