SUMNER — A school bus driver and his lone passenger escaped injury Tuesday morning after the bus slid on ice and flipped onto its side on Lower Sumner Hill Road.

When police and emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found the bus laying on its passenger side across the roadway. The driver, 40-year-old Kevin Philbrick of Hartford, was still on the bus, as was his passenger, an 11-year-old student from Hartford-Sumner Elementary.

Neither the driver nor his passenger were hurt. They were removed from the bus and evaluated by paramedics at the scene.

The bus, a 2015 Bluebird, sustained damages to the passenger side. It was towed from the scene.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the crash later Tuesday. Investigators said “very slippery” road conditions were the likely cause of the wreck.
