PARIS — The Paris Select Board canceled a special town meeting scheduled for Dec. 23 and agreed to purchase a sidewalk tractor during a special meeting Monday.

The board approved using $55,788 from the highway department equipment reserve account to purchase a Bobcat L28 diesel sidewalk tractor for clearing sidewalks.

At the board’s previous meeting Dec. 9, it considered various estimates provided by Highway Director James “Jamie” Hutchinson before deciding on recommending the Bobcat AT450 gas-powered articulating tractor.

The board scheduled a special town meeting for Dec. 23 to transfer the $52,792 needed for the tractor. However, Town Manager Natalie Andrews said some board members had concerns about the meeting’s closeness to the holidays and a meeting was called for Monday for the board to alter its approach.

“What we’re trying to accomplish is clearing the sidewalks,” Andrews said at the Dec. 9 meeting. “It’s just beginning to snow and we’ve already had an issue.”

Select board member Chris Summers said Dec. 9 that the old tractor was fixed and running last year but simply died.

“It was running, and it quit. Like equipment does,” he said.

The Paris Select Board will next meet at 6 p.m. Dec. 23.
