The flannel shops have kept up a fair race and personnel. This is true at the M. C. Stone & Son Company in Lewiston, whose expansion is now in order.
New Year’s will find this shop in the Lewiston Journal block, doing an increasing business. Production is to be doubled, with 36 new machines set up, modern cutting machines put into use with each of which one man can do the work of three or four cutters, and a thorough rearrangement of the equipment so that many steps and much time will be saved on moving along the article manufactured in orderly fashion from the cutting room on the top floor to the sewing machines and finishers on the floor below.
The rearrangement of 125 machines was practically completed last week, in less than a week’s time, during which, part of the girls were kept employed and the full crew was on duty Monday.

Eight puppies, found on a country road between Wales and Greene, have been taken to an animal shelter. The Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department said today that the puppies, about five or six weeks old, were discovered by Robert Webster of Nason’s Beach Road in Greene.
Webster took the pups home, found they were “real friendly” but wet and very hungry. He fed them and called the Sheriff’s Department.
It appeared that someone just drove up to the area, and dropped the animals off.
Deputy Kovi George took the eight to the SPCA shelter in Auburn, where he was told that the animals apparently are ill.

State labor officials said Thursday they are preparing for layoffs that may be of longer duration than those announced by Carleton Woolen Mills in Winthrop.
The company told more than 300 workers Thursday that they would be temporarily laid off during the first week of the new year, according to the state Labor Department.
Carleton makes woolen fabric for apparel and felt for gaming tables.
The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
