DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you please identify who will accept partially-full cans of paint for disposal? Apparently, Lewiston Public Works does not receive them.
Thanks for all the information that you share with the community! — Paul, Lewiston
ANSWER: If the paint is still good, you may want to offer it as a donation to a non-profit such as ArtVan (https://www.artvanprogram.org/donate) which serves Bath, Brunswick, Rumford, Mexico, Lewiston and Auburn. They always need materials, financial donations and volunteers.
Aubuchon Hardware at 572 Lisbon St. in Lisbon Falls and the Sherwin-Williams stores at 1168 Lisbon St. in Lewiston and at 445 Center St. in Auburn will accept your paint during their normal business hours. Call ahead to make sure the store can accept the amount and type of paint you would like to recycle.
There’s a 5-gallon per visit limit. According to https://www.paintcare.org/drop-off-sites/#/find-a-drop-off-site, this site accepts latex and oil-based house paint, stains and varnish in containers up to 5 gallons in size. This site does not accept aerosols (spray paint or other spray products), containers without original labels, or containers that are leaking or empty.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Pleasant St. Drop-in Center at 169 Pleasant St. in Auburn has some critical needs this week that include men’s warm pants — sizes 32, 34; men’s underwear — sizes 32, 34; winter boots, warm socks and winter gloves for men and women.
We are also always in need of blankets, sleeping bags, and hand and foot warmers.
Items can be dropped off on Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. If those times don’t work for you and you have items to donate, please send me a private message on Facebook (www.facebook.com/groups/716529479663868/?multi_permalinks=1316386489678161%2C1315879776395499¬if_id=1736037218741968¬if_t=group_activity&ref=notif ) and we will make arrangements for pick up. Thank you all for your unending generosity! — Sue, no town
ANSWER: As always, please help the unhoused people in our community who are spending their days out in the elements. Check your closets and cubbies for items in good condition that you no longer use and would be so useful to those who are trying to stay warm and safe.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m downsizing and have some antique and vintage home goods I’d like to consign. Do you know of any businesses within a 50-mile radius of Lisbon that could help me find a place to offer these? — Shane, no town
ANSWER: Check in with Fancy Farmhouse at 18 Main St. in Lisbon Falls. If you don’t mind waiting until February, J. Plum, just around the corner at 9 Union St., will be open again (they are currently enjoying a January break).
In nearby Brunswick, inquire at Magpie (#66) and Hatch on Maine (#96), two home goods shops right on Maine St.
You can also inquire at Cabot Mill Antiques in Fort Andross adjacent to the Frank Wood Bridge in Topsham/Brunswick where there are dozens of booths full of vintage finds and antiques.
If you have more places to recommend, let me know.
