Maine comedian Karen Morgan, at Hannaford when she’s not on the road. Submitted photo

Karen Morgan is one of the more prolific Maine comedians out there these days. Her official bio looks like this:

“Morgan was born and raised in Athens, Georgia, but now calls Maine home. A former trial attorney, she began her professional comedy career as a finalist on Nickelodeon Television’s ‘Search for the Funniest Mom in America.’ Since then, she has performed in comedy clubs and theaters from New York to Hollywood. Her latest CD, ‘Mean Candy,’ can be heard on Sirius XM Radio and her comedy special can be seen on Dry Bar Comedy.”

When reached this week, Morgan was on the road, as she often is, but she took time out to answer some questions remotely about the local comedy scene in which she flourishes. And the rumors are true. Morgan really IS hilarious.

Why does comedy thrive so in Maine?

Comedy thrives in Maine because Mainers are smart people who suffer no fools. I think Mainers have a dry sense of humor and they appreciate well-written comedy. It also thrives because of Maine venues like Great Falls Comedy Club, who consistently book shows where comics can hone their craft.

What are the key ingredients for anyone trying to make it in the world of comedy? Hard work? Perseverance?

Yes to both of those, plus a little dash of insanity. Good writing is the most important ingredient of all.

Were you inspired by any of Maine’s comics, current or past?

Tim Sample is an amazing humorist, storyteller, writer, and most importantly, a good human being. George Hamm is a dear friend and one of the funniest people I know. John Ater and Tuck Tucker are also hilarious, dear friends who bring their all to every show they are on.
