Six families were left homeless Wednesday afternoon when fire ripped through an apartment building on Second Street in Auburn, forcing many of the tenants to flee with only the clothes on their backs.
No one was hurt in the 2 p.m. blaze, but the building at 4 Second St. was demolished. Early reports were that a fallen candle in a third floor apartment ignited a curtain and flames spread quickly to the roof.
In all, 25 people were homeless Wednesday night, the majority of them children. Several pets perished in the fire but others were saved.
