DIXFIELD — Students at T. W. Kelly Dirigo Middle School participated in the second annual Dirigo Diversity Day on Jan. 17, with guest speakers, breakout activities, international cuisine and a dance workshop.
Developed at the recommendation of the Regional School Unit 56 School Board Ad Hoc Committee on Civil Rights, Dirigo Diversity Day is an updated version of the Diversity Day programs from when Dixfield, Canton, Carthage and Peru were part of the old School Administrative District 21.
This year, the theme was “E Pluribus Unum,” a Latin phrase meaning “out of many, one,” according to a news release from the school.
According to the letter sent home to parents in advance by Principal Jason Long, “Patriots used this thirteen-letter phrase in 1776 to signify the unity of the different colonies in their quest for independence … the phrase continues to be a powerful expression of our history, diversity and unity.”
