Michael Nadeau clears snow Monday from his front lawn ice rink at his home in Sabattus. Nadeau, who grew up in Lewiston, has been skating on homemade rinks since childhood. He explained that they started by making ice directly in the snow, then moved on to using bits of wood, planks and two-by-fours. Recently, he transitioned to a snap-together, ready-made rink. He has four children and nine grandchildren living nearby. All of them skate, although not all play hockey. Nadeau still plays hockey in a men’s league in Auburn. Maintaining the rink takes him less than an hour after each snowfall, and he uses a small hand-dragged Zamboni to keep the ice in top condition. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
