Snow returns Friday to Maine

Frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chills will give way to snow across western Maine heading into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.

Wind chills early Thursday dropped to between -5 and -15 degrees across the region, with Rumford recording -16 degrees. The cold temperatures are expected to moderate somewhat Thursday night, though lows will still reach near zero.

Snow will move into the Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties Friday, with accumulations of 1-5 inches expected. The National Weather Service warns that the evening commute will be slick, with the heaviest snowfall likely during the afternoon and early evening hours.

The weekend will turn blustery, with gusty northwest winds on Saturday ushering in another round of cold air from Quebec. Forecasters say Saturday night temperatures could dip below zero across much of the region under clearing skies.

A quick-moving storm system will affect the area Sunday night into Monday, potentially starting as snow before changing to rain as temperatures climb into the 40s by Monday afternoon.
