DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Mexico Congregational Church, UCC (the “Green Church”) at 163 Main St. is set to host “Sweets for Your Sweetie” from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb.13.
The event is to include homemade pastries, candies and other treats in festive packaging for sale. Those who are shopping for Valentine’s Day will find delicious gifts for that special someone.
The event is planned for the conference room on the church’s main floor, which is accessible using the ramp from the parking lot or the Main Street door, near the large lawn sign.—Carol, Mexico
ANSWER: What a wonderful idea. I cannot wait to hear how it goes.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Heywood Club of Crockett Ridge in Norway would like to thank all who donated to our “Lights of Love” Christmas tree in December.
We were able to raise $2,226, which allowed us to make a $1,000 donation to the Dominic Dumont Scholarship Fund and deposit $1,226 into our maintenance fund, to replace the main sill on the back of the clubhouse.
Our next fundraiser is planned as a “Spring Garden” calendar. Details to come soon.
We plan to be back the second Saturday in June with our annual 7-Mile Yard Sale. We have already received some wonderful donations for the sale.
Thank you to all who support our wonderful organization. From 1903 to 2025, it is still going strong.—Barbara, Norway
ANSWER: You should be very proud of yourselves. I was wondering how everything went went, and I’m so happy that your fundraiser was such a success. I look forward to getting out the word about the calendar and yard sales.
Keep up the good work.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Please, please, please, clean the snow and ice off your vehicles. Passed in 2023, there is a state law that requires you to remove snow and ice from your vehicles so it does not fly off and hit another vehicle, which could result in an accident.
Last Wednesday, my granddaughter’s car was hit by ice flying off a truck that drove past her on Interstate 95. The impact startled her enough that it took her a moment to correct the steering when her vehicle swerved. She had a close call, but was not hurt.
Please be careful out there.—Miranda, no town
ANSWER: I am glad your granddaughter is OK. Here is the law, but by this time, everyone should know this and be in compliance when traveling Maine’s winter roads:
Title 29-A: MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC §2093. Snow and ice; duty of care: The operator of a vehicle with a registered weight under 10,000 pounds shall take reasonable measures to prevent snow or ice on the vehicle from falling off the vehicle while it is being operated on a public way. A violation of this section that causes damage or injury is a traffic infraction subject to a fine of not more than $50 for a first offense and for which a fine of not less than $150 and not more than $250 may be adjudged for each subsequent offense.
