100 Years Ago: 1925
Dr. L. J. Dumont, Lewiston health officer, has given notice that all persons or firms who do not apply for their Food Handlers Certificates at once are subject to arrest.
The six months time required for them to make an application is long overdue and many have yet to do so.
50 Years Ago: 1975
The Insurance Women of Androscoggin Valley held their annual Bosses’ Night at Steckino’s Restaurant, Lewiston, Wednesday night and named James O. Coyne “Boss of the Year”.
There were several former Bosses of the Year on hand to applaud the choice, M. S. Fitzherbert of Dunlap agency’s vice president of the Dunlap Insurance Agency, 1970’s choice; William F. White, president of White and Harris, 1972 winner; Gerald A. LaPlante, Branch supervisor for Dunlap, 1973 choice and M. P. Beckler, executive vice president, general manager Patrons Mutual Ins. Co., chosen in 1974.
Mr. Coyne is Maine Branch Manager of the Concord Group Insurance Companies, President of the State Mutual Insurance Company and is on the Board of Directors. He is a graduate of Auburn schools, took special courses in insurance and a law course. After a few years in business, he became affiliated with the then Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, first as an adjuster and then as production supervisor.
25 Years Ago: 2000
Kalle Oakes, Sun Journal sports editor, has been voted Maine’s sportswriter of the year for 1999 by the state’s other sportswriters.
The annual contest is sponsored by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, and names a winning writer and broadcaster in each state. The national winners are Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated and Dan Patrick of ESPN.
In Maine, the winning broadcaster was Rich Kimball in Bangor.
