The coffers of the city of Auburn are $500 richer today, the result of a donation by a nonprofit organization.
This morning, City Manager Bernard J. Murphy Jr. received a check in that amount from Kendrick J. Chapman, treasurer of the Auburn Home For Aged Women Inc., at 41 Pleasant St., an organization that is tax exempt.
The short letter which accompanied the check reads as follows:
“We have again found it possible to include in our budget a $500 contribution to the city of Auburn in lieu of taxes and are pleased to enclose our check in that amount.”
The contribution is scheduled to get some applause at tonight’s regular meeting of the city council.

Even as Bookland opens its doors Saturday to write the final chapter in its Lewiston history, another story is being penned. Its title, though, remains a secret, for now.
“We have negotiated a deal with another bookstore,” said Andy Rosenthal, the Promenade’s manager. Rosenthal said the store “hopes to open as soon as Bookland vacates.”
He wouldn’t name the company Friday.. “It’s a large chain,” Rosenthal said. “We’re writing the lease now.”
An announcement of the mall’s newest tenant should be made next week, he said:
Bookland revealed it was closing its store here in a newspaper advertisement published Thursday. Employees at the local store referred inquiries to Bookland’s headquarters. Stuart Gersen, Bookland’s corporate manager, didn’t return repeated telephone calls seeking comment or an explanation of the store’s published reason for closing: “Circumstances beyond our control.”
The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
