I am a retired high school teacher. I have been a middle school guest teacher since 2020.

Over the course of my classroom teaching, the daily newspaper has been a constant in my classroom.

I grew up with the newspaper at home and the Weekly Reader in school, and I have subscribed to a seven-day newspaper all of my adult life. In this time of fear and chaos, we need to ground our students and their families with reporting and journalism that is professional and factual.

Maine could be a leader in education by integrating the daily news into lesson plans. We should bring back Newspapers in Education serials and allow students to learn what excellence in reporting and journalism look like. We should bring back school newspapers written and printed by the students and for the community.

I know bringing my newspaper to school is the best tool in my toolbox.
