I thank Gov. Janet Mills and Rep. Ryan Fecteau for standing up to the bully who is threatening to withhold funding to our schools and for abiding by our state and federal laws despite his threats. And I thank Cumberland-North Yarmouth schools Superintendent Jeffrey Porter for supporting all his students equally.

And shame on Rep. Laurel Libby for targeting a transgender athlete in such a public way. Libby talks about protecting the rights of female athletes, but what she doesn’t understand is that the transgender athlete is a female athlete.

The prefix “trans” means “changing or having changed from one thing to another.” This transgender athlete is brave enough to become her true self despite the fear of rejection, and she just wants to compete in a sport that she loves. Rep. Libby is using her as a political pawn.

Posting her photo on Facebook is not only wrong, but it is placing that athlete in harm’s way. Ms. Libby needs to apologize to this young girl and back off.
