In a world where one can be anything, be kind.
We often tell young people this precept, yet many of us adults don’t follow it. When Rep. Laurel Libby chose to put a spotlight on a single student, I think most of us felt not only how unkind but also how inappropriate and dangerous that was, regardless of our political view.
In a society, the most vulnerable is the individual, especially if they are young and marginalized. Rep. Libby chose to put, and keep, a target on one of the most vulnerable of the vulnerables.
Sports in schools are often a way for students to feel they belong.
As it is, between an elected official championing a group, and her targeting an individual student, possibly endangering their life, there is a vast difference. Such action can hardly foster a sense of belonging for the representative’s marginalized constituents.
In thinking about that, I hope some of us will find our way to kindness and humanity.
