UMaine’s Kellen Tynes defends Duke’s Duke’s Kon Knueppel during the Black Bears’ season opener. Tynes was named the America East Defensive Player of the Year on Friday.

University of Maine guard Kellen Tynes was named the America East men’s basketball Defensive Player of the Year for the third straight season on Friday.

Tynes is just the second player in conference history to win the honor three times, joining Vermont’s Marqus Blakely (2008-2010).

The senior guard is second in NCAA Division I in steals (97) and steals per game (3.13). He has a school record 229 steals in his career.

Tynes, who averages 12.7 points and 4.6 assists per game, was also named second-team all-conference, along with teammate AJ Lopez. A senior guard, Lopez averages 14.6 points per game for the Black Bears, who finished the regular season 18-13 and will host UMass Lowell in the America East quarterfinals on Saturday evening.

Earl Timberlake, a senior guard at Bryant, was named the America East Player of the Year, while teammate Barry Evans, a junior forward, was named the Newcomer of the Year. Albany forward Justin Neely was named the Sixth Player of the Year, UMass Lowell’s Martin Somerville the Rookie of the Year and Bryant’s Phil Martelli Jr. the Coach of the Year.
