The other day, I watched my six-year-old granddaughter receive two first-place awards for participating in her school’s Winter Olympics in Florida. As she stood on the center podium, her face radiated her accomplishments.

I thought about the war we battle in Maine to protect girls in sports and locker rooms. I later asked my granddaughter why she picked the long jump and not the 50-yard dash since she is so fast, and she said, “Nene, I could never compete against (that student) because he is the fastest boy in school. I just wanted to win an event.”

My sweet girl didn’t understand that there was a girls’ category and a boys’. Even a 6-year-old knows the advantages of male anatomy.

I’ve flown back home to Maine to help protect our girls and support the injustice of Rep. Laurel Libby’s censuring. It breaks my heart to answer the question, “What has happened to Maine?”
