The Medicaid legislation being touted by President Trump and congressional Republicans contains budgetary cuts that are senseless, heartless, unethical and un-Christian.

For the 75 million Americans on Medicaid — 21% of our population — if these cuts are enacted it’s projected that millions of working citizens will lose their Medicaid, with the probability of resulting deaths, and untold increases in medical illnesses. Democrats in Congress are totally opposed to these Medicaid cuts.

The House congressional Republicans’ taxation proposal in Congress, masterminded by President Trump, is also immoral, draconian and uncompassionate. House Republicans propose a tax bill that, if signed into law by the president, will provide massive tax breaks for the wealthy (those with incomes of $365,000 — filing jointly — and upward) by authorizing $4.5 trillion of tax reductions over a 10-year period. About 50% of the money will go to the most wealthy, with the remaining 90% of us receiving the other half. These cuts are in addition to roughly $2 trillion in other cuts Republicans propose over the 10-year period.

How caring, moral and sensible it would be if congressional Republicans and President Trump allocated half of the $4.5 trillion in tax reductions to us — the 90%. Then, they should apportion the remaining $4.5 trillion, and the additional $2 trillion in budget cuts, to shortfalls in Medicaid, Social Security, Medicare and other discretionary programs.

Democrats have been proposing these funding priorities for years but Republicans continually block their proposals.
