LIVERMORE FALLS – Mary Estelle Moulton, born March 2, 1924, with the family name of Gould, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, on March 12, 2025, at the age of 101.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, Mary later moved with her family to East Livermore, Maine, where she laid down roots. She attended high school in Livermore Falls and went on to lead a life full of dedication, adventure, and love.
Mary married Frank Cox, with whom she had three children: Susan (Cox) Gammon (deceased), Michael Cox of Cornish, and Timothy Cox of Livermore. She was a hardworking woman who held many jobs throughout her life, including serving as a postal carrier, working as a laborer at Otis Mill, and would hitchhike down to Boston for her job as a welder with the Union on the U.S. Liberty ships during World War II.
Her love of nature led her to spend countless hours hiking, hunting, and gardening. She would frequently travel, often on adventures in Australia, though always returning to Maine. She was an integral part of her community, bringing joy every October as “The Ghost Lady” with her elaborate Halloween displays. Mary was also a dedicated volunteer, contributing countless hours to the Daughters of Isabelle at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Mary had a passion for collecting, amassing a remarkable collection of over 500 teapots. Her artistic talents were also well known, with her 3D landscape artwork adorning the walls of both family homes and public buildings. Her contributions to the Jay Historical Society, where she helped create a model of Jay Hill, reflected her deep love for history and community.
She was well-loved in her community, making friends wherever she went during her more than a century of life. Her warmth, wit, and generous spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Florence and Clyde Gould, as well as her brothers Robert, Donald, and Raymond, and her sisters Alice, Meredith, Florence and Doris. She was a proud grandmother of eight, great-grandmother of sixteen, and great-great-grandmother of five, and is predeceased by three- Andy, Autumn and Kim. Her smile and loving nature will be greatly missed by all who had the great fortune to know her.
