BUCKFIELD — Voters at the annual town meeting will determine whether an ordinance should be enacted to allow for the billing and restitution of certain services provided by the fire department to nonresidents.

The ordinance, which will be listed on the town warrant, will not apply to Buckfield residents. Insurance companies of nonresidents would be billed by a third-party firm hired by the town.

“This is a very common practice now,” Select Board chairman Robert Hand said.

Services the ordinance allows to be billed include scene and safety control at traffic accidents, disengagement and extraction operations from vehicles, fluid and hazardous substance mitigation at traffic accidents, vehicle fires and hazardous mitigation operations.

Billing is also allowed for any mutual calls if Buckfield Fire Department is the lone agency on scene, Town Manager Cameron Hinkley said.

Calls from outside the town can often tie up services if residents need assistance.

The proposed ordinance will be voted on by residents at the town meeting on June 10 by ballot at the polls.

If approved by voters, the Select Board will determine the appropriate fees for service. Fees will be limited to cost recovery.
