“The Lewiston police were ordered to maintain a stricter enforcement of the speed laws, by Chief Field, Monday. Automobile drivers who persist in using the public highways as racetracks will be quickly brought in check. The war on speeders has been launched and it is expected that the police court will experience rushing business unless certain motorists mend their ways. Children dancing in the streets in front of automobiles are becoming a problem, said Chief Field. Unless this habit is discouraged at once, it is going to lead to accidents, he pointed out. ‘It is the duty of parents to talk to their children about traffic problems and forbid them from playing in the street,’ he said.”

“The Lewiston Auburn Workingman’s Club was broken into during the night and $75 in cash is missing. According to Police Capt. Anthony Emmi, entry was made by forcing a rear door. The money was taken from game machines, police said. The break was reported shortly before 6 a.m. today by an employee. The incident, investigated by Officer Frederick Nelson, is similar to a break reported at The Cage on Ash Street where a similar amount was taken from game machines Thursday night.”

“After 67 years of growing apples (in Monmouth), Chick Orchards is going out of business. ‘We’ve just decided we’re not going to raise another crop of apples,’ said co-owner Norman Chick. Chick said many factors contributed to the decision, but wouldn’t elaborate Tuesday night. Nor would he say what the future plans for the orchards are. He said those things are still being decided. ‘It’s been a real difficult decision, but we feel it’s the right decision,’ Chick said. The orchards sprawl across more than 500 acres in town and produce more than 300,000 boxes of apples in a season.”
