I have a live and let live philosophy. If people want to live in a tree or have 12 children, fine, that is their choice. If they want to transition their sex, that is their business. The science tells us to hold off until our hormones settle, but people can make their own choices. Further, teens in any struggle must be heard, respected and responded to accordingly.

But I object to trans males, whether claiming trans or surgically trans, participating in female teenage sports. The bodies are different, which is why we have male and female sports in the first place. This is not about bias or phobias, it is simple common sense.

The Democrats in the Legislature passed a bill to protect trans athletes and allow trans men to participate in girls’ sports.

The governor has dug herself into a hole defending it.

Eighty percent of Americans polled recently do not like such laws.

How about the Press Herald and Bangor Daily News conduct a Maine statewide poll to advise the Legislature and the governor about what we want? They work for us. Assuming an overwhelming majority reject the law, the governor can accept the will of the people and change accordingly. Trump gets what he wants, the governor does not have to apologize and the state can collect $300 million in federal money.

And if the majority wants such laws then we are moving out of this woke and soon-to-be bankrupt state.
