In a time of deep political division, I want to commend Steve Collins — not just for his journalism, but for his integrity.

Steve and I don’t always agree politically. He’s a lifelong Democrat; I’m an independent with views that cross party lines. But that’s the beauty of democracy: we can disagree and still sit down together with respect.

Steve once faced the threat of jail to protect a source. That level of integrity is rare, and it’s something all of us — regardless of politics — should admire. His work mentoring young journalists and telling difficult stories shows his deep commitment to Maine and to truth.

Years ago, Steve wrote an article about me that I didn’t love, but it was fair. Later, when I faced public challenges, he was the only journalist willing to help me share my side. That stuck with me.

I’m glad to see him take on a new role as an opinion columnist. I may not always agree with his perspective, but I’ll always respect it. We need more of that in our world today — people who can listen, speak honestly and still shake hands at the end of the day. Here’s to honest dialogue, mutual respect and the shared love we have for our state — something Steve and I definitely have in common.
