Dr. Brown makes house call to Chocolate Church

BATH — “Physical,” “surreal,” “funny” and “bonkers” are just a few of the many words that have been used to describe Dr. Brown, winner of the 2012 Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award, Total Theatre Award, and Melbourne International Comedy Festival Barry Award.

Dr. Brown will bring his wonderful absurdity to three shows, including a matinee for kids, at Chocolate Church Arts Center in Bath on Saturday, April 26.

He can be seen in Netflix’s “The Characters” and “Feel Good” and in UK Channel 4’s “Dr. Brown Comedy Blaps” and “4funnies.” He wrote and starred in the award-winning short film “The Passage” and directed the Netflix comedy special “Nate.”

“About as bonkers an hour of comedy as ever you would find — part Mr. Bean, part Buster Keaton, all odd,” said the Sunday Times.

Palaver Strings explores life’s journey

Palaver Strings will perform at Trinity Commons as part of its Oasis of Music series.

LEWISTON — Palaver Strings, a 14-piece Portland-based chamber orchestra, will perform at Trinity Commons as part of the Oasis of Music series, on Wednesday, April 23, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Palaver Strings is a Grammy-nominated, musician-led string ensemble and nonprofit organization based in Portland. Its mission is to strengthen and inspire community through music.

Palaver Strings’ program is entitled “But There Is This,” and explores our journey through life and our quest for meaning, even when it remains elusive. In works by Corigiliano, Mustonen, Yoshimatu and Shostakovich, fragments of themes and ideas emerge over time, slowly and imperfectly revealing themselves as part of a larger whole. This program reminds us, in the words of Barabara Ras, that “there is the voice you can still summon at will, like your mother’s/it will always whisper, you can’t have it all, but there is this.”

Admission to the Oasis of Music is free, with donations accepted. For more information, email [email protected]. Trinity Commons is located at 247 Bates St.
