Sam Cunningham, a science educator from the Chewonki Foundation, shows a northern saw-whet owl Tuesday during an Earth Day presentation at the Lewiston Public Library. The tiny owl, only about 8 inches tall, gets its name from its call, which sounds like a saw being sharpened. The presentation during school vacation week drew a packed house to the  Callahan Room. Julia Maloney of Winthrop and her daughters, Althea, 5, on her lap, and Nora, 6, examine the wing of a great horned owl Tuesday during a Chewonki Foundation presentation at the Lewiston Public Library. The wing, taken from an owl that died, is built for silent flight with special feather edges that allow the predator to swoop through the air without a sound. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
