Edward Little opened its softball season Wednesday with an 8-3 victory against Camden Hills at Central Maine Community College, helped by freshman Emily Poulin’s three runs and two triples.
“I’ve been wanting to do this since I was little, watching the older people do it,” Poulin said about starting for the Red Eddies in her first varsity game. “I hit opposite (field) to get the runners in, so I had to focus on just getting my bat on (the ball), not hitting for the fences.”
The last time Edward Little met the Windjammers, who were also playing their opener, was in the Class A North quarterfinals last June. The Red Eddies also won that contest.
“Camden Hills is going to be one of the top programs in our conference,” Edward Little coach Elaine Derosby said. “They ended their season last year in the playoffs, so I knew this was going to be a game that they were coming for again, and it’s a great team win. We did a lot of things, everybody contributed. There’s positivity everywhere.”
How it happened
• Poulin singled in the first inning, then ran home on two hits to score the first run. She scored again in the fifth after two stolen bases, and in the sixth following her triple.
• Kylee Lebrun turned her fifth-inning single into a run by stealing two bases, then coming home on Kassidy Lobb’s hit.
• Allie Michaud scored in the third and sixth innings. Her first run came on a passed ball. In the sixth, she singled and stole two bases before scoring Edward Little’s seventh run.
• Elizabeth Galway and Nellie Feeney also scored for the Red Eddies. Galway reached on a single and Feeney on a walk.
• Thea Laukka, Charlotte McGreevy and Brooklyn Rollins scored for the Windjammers. Laukka capitalized on a passed ball in the seventh. McGreevy doubled, then scored on Evangeline Morneau’s RBI, and Rollins doubled home Alanna Smith.

Notable quotes
• “Emily (Poulin), like all the other freshmen, is competing. We don’t talk about working hard in practice, we talk about competing every day in practice, because that’s a more positive (thing). When she competes, she makes everybody around her better. She’s going through drills really hard and she’s listening; she’s coachable.” — Edward Little coach Elaine Derosby
• “Charlotte McGreevy came over from Oxford Hills, and what a great addition. What a great individual, what an amazing softball player and a great pitcher. Pitched a great game for us today, and she hit the ball hard.” — Camden Hills coach Ben Laukka
