LEWISTON — Lewiston starting pitcher Joe Dube hit two batters in the first inning, but a double play got him out of the jam and he settled down afterward in a 6-2 baseball victory over Edward Little on Wednesday.

Dube threw a complete game, allowing three hits, walking two batters and striking out seven.

“Really just commanding the off-speed pitches, keeping the hitters guessing,” Dube said. “That’s really all I try to do, and it worked today.”

Dube ran into trouble in the sixth when TJ Kramarz doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. After a balk brought in the Red Eddies’ first run, Max Kimble had an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-2.

Lewiston coach Matt Bowen said Dube stayed focused when he got into trouble.

“He’s a competitor,” Bowen said. “I mean, he’s a football player. He’s got that in his DNA. So he just hunkered down and threw the pitches he needed to throw and got the strikes.”

How did Lewiston win?

• Lewiston got back-to-back RBI singles from Dube and Spencer Chartier in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead.

“We kind of … stress on having good approaches when we get to two strikes,” said Chartier, who finished with three hits. “And I think I got it to two strikes on two of the hits. And just knowing situationally where to put the ball and best swing on whatever pitch comes.”

• The Red Eddies nearly got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third, but Jeffrey Randall’s two-out, two-run single gave the Blue Devils a 4-0 lead. The inning finally ended when Edward Little right fielder Max Nelson made a diving catch.

• Owen Norton’s RBI single down the right-field line highlighted a two-run bottom of the fifth for Lewiston.

They said it

• “(Chartier) got on base when he needed to, he was calm at the plate, he just shortened up his approach to the ball, made great contact going the other way, pulling the ball, did exactly what we needed.” — Matt Bowen

• “I thought they did a nice job … when we did get some guys in scoring position. Joe did a great job of coming down and making a pitch and getting out of it. There’s a few early innings they would (get) a couple runs that we were really one pitch away from kind of getting out of it. We’ll get better. We got a lot of new people in different positions, and we’re just going to have to keep working to get better.” — Edward Little coach Dave Jordan
