DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for your help in finding a home for the table top printing presses and typeset trays (April 25 Sun Spots). Jeff from the Franklin County Agricultural Society waited patiently until 8 a.m. to call me after a friend emailed him regarding the Sun Spots column.

I had a very pleasant conversation with Jeff which inspired me to reach out to the Dixfield Historical Society. Dixfield is where our family home was and where our dad used the printing materials.

I am very happy to share that a press and accessories are going to both the above mentioned societies which both have museums.

If you go to the Farmington Fair, look for the press, probably in the West Farmington Post Office exhibit. Thanks again! — Barbara, Roxbury

ANSWER: I’m really pleased that you have found a home for your table-top printing presses, especially since many people will be able to enjoy them and be educated by them. Good for you!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m wondering how to get a REAL ID here in Maine. When will it be legally required? I believe right now we can use a passport card or regular passport for flying anywhere.

Are you required to go to the BMV or can I get this task completed by calling for an application? My license was renewed just last year and I hate the thought of going to the BMV and waiting for hours. — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Since you have a passport, you don’t need to do anything now. When it’s time to renew your license, you’ll need to go to the BMV (you can call to make an appointment) to get your REAL ID. So breathe easy, you’re all set for now.

For those who don’t have a passport and will be flying within the United States or entering federal facilities, a REAL ID is required beginning May 7. You don’t need a REAL ID to drive, register to vote or get federal benefits. Everything you need to know is here: https://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/driver-licenses-and-ids/real-id .

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m curious what is going on in the old church on the corner of School Street & Route 196 in Lisbon Falls.

For years it was vacant and at times work was being done. It looked like it could have been an antique shop.

Over the past few months major work has been done including new doors and windows, etc. Structurally, it is a beautiful old building. Is it going to become a new business of sorts? — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: I spoke with Ross Cunningham, the town’s Director of Economic & Community Development. He let me know that the old church is private housing, not intended for a business. I’m sure it will be beautiful when the restoration is complete.

Whenever you’re curious about new construction or renovations in a municipality, you are always welcome to call the town or city offices and ask questions. The town clerk can direct you to the appropriate department if you’re not sure. This is a good way to familiarize yourself with how your municipality works and gives you an opportunity to get to know all the folks working behind the scenes for you.
