ARTS

The Rangeley Friends of the Arts will host an Artist Reception celebrating the works of Gabrielle Castle’s award winning portraits and Sonja Johnsons illustrations narrated by Tim Straub at the Lakeside Contemporary Art Gallery, 2493 Main St., on Friday May 23, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Come on out to meet the artists, enjoy complimentary refreshments and a beer/wine cash bar. The exhibit continues through July 8. Following the reception, gallery hours will be Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

ADULT RESPITE CARE

The Adult Respite Care Program, called HARC (HELP ADULT RESPITE CARE), is a service which provides needed relief for caregivers of cognitively challenged seniors. The program has activities designed specifically to enrich the participants’ daily lives based on their capabilities, experience, interests and personality. This service is open Wednesdays 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., and is located at the lower level of Rangeley Family Medicine, 42 Dallas Hill Rd., and includes lunch and a snack. This program is sponsored by HELP (Helping Elders Live in Place), a program of Rangeley Health and Wellness. For more information, contact Kathy Hewins at (207)864-4397 option 6.

FOOD

Rangeley Food Bank welcomes all to stop by every Tuesday 10 a.m.-12 noon at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2614 Main St. We’ve got lots of good food to fill you up.

LIBRARY

The Rangeley Public Library, 7 Lake St., is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Preschool Story Hour meets weekly at 10 a.m. on Fridays while school is in session. Story hours includes stories, crafts and other fun activities.

May Book Discussions Groups: Rangeley Readers will discuss “The Fox Wife” by Yangsze Chou on Wednesday, May 21, at 3 p.m. Adventure Book Group will meet on Wednesday, May 28, at 4 p.m. to discuss “Mountains Beyond Mountains” by Tracy Kidder.

MAHJONG

Mahjong on Wednesday afternoons at 1 p.m., at the Townhouse Apartments lunch room, across from the Fire Station. $2 donation. Call Jackie @ 207-557-2503 for questions.

Mahjong at the Barn will held at the Rangeley Congregational Church Barn, 2 High Street,  1st and 3rd  Mondays of the month.  This gathering is for beginners and experienced players as well.  It is the perfect opportunity to learn the game.  Email Ann Franklin at [email protected].

Mother’s Day Potluck Brunch will be held Sunday, May 11, 10 a.m. – noon, in the Congregational Church Barn at the corner of Pleasant and High St. Bring a passing dish and join us. All are welcome.

Rangeley Region Guides & Sportsmen’s Association will hold its monthly potluck on Thursday, May 15, at the clubhouse, 41 Old Skiway Rd in Oquossoc Village. Guest Speakers from Buxton Hollis Fish and Game will share details on shooting sports, opportunities our club has, and what’s happening across Maine. Doors open at 5 p.m., the potluck begins at 5:30 p.m.  Please bring your favorite dish or dessert to share. Family and friends are welcome to attend this community event. This event is open to all members and non-members. We look forward to seeing you for an evening of good food, great company, and local history!

MUSEUMS

The Historic Rangeley Outdoor Heritage Museum,8 Rumford Rd. in Oquossoc Village, opens for the season Wednesday, May 21. Rangeley region residents can enjoy free admission Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25. Hours for May, June, September and October are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July and August, the museum is open the same hours Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free for members, children 12 and under, and active-duty military. Adult admission is $8. Special admission pricing for veterans is $5.

RANGES

Rangeley Region Guides & Sportsmen’s Association Rifle and Pistol Range opens for the season Thursday, May 15. The range is located on Morton Cutoff Rd, Opening Day at our Rifle and Pistol Range located in the Old Fanjoy Pit on Morton Cutoff Rd. Must be a member of RRG&SA and sign an annual liability release. For membership information, visit rrgsa.org. May 15 is also opening day at the Skeet & Trap Club located at the end of Old Skiway Rd. THRIFT SHOPPE

The Church of the Good Shepherd Thrift Shoppe, 2614 Main Street, is open Friday and Saturday mornings 9 a.m. to noon. It is a place that is shopped by local folks, winter and summer folks, and the Rangeley Friends of the Arts searching for costumes and set decorations. The bargains are amazing and the range of goods diverse. Proceeds from our Shoppe support the operating costs of Good Shepherd and contributes to local, national and international agencies that provide for the poor and needy of the world. The Thrift Shoppe accepts donations of gently worn clothing, jewelry, accessories and household items. (No televisions, large electronics or furniture, please. See full list of items that can not be accepted in the Undercroft) Donations may be dropped off at the Undercroft anytime during the day or evening.

WANTED: PLASTIC

It isn’t often that used milk jugs, detergent bottles, shampoo bottles and the like are considered a hot commodity. However, Rangeley Lakes Regional School needs clean HDPE #2 plastic for an upcoming project. The school will host Maine artist Kim Bernard May 27 -30 . She will work with students to creates a permanent art installation at the school made entirely from recycled plastics. Clean – washed and dried – HDPE #2 plastics can be dropped off in the lobby of RLRS until May 27. If you have more plastic than you can drop off, contact Abigail Thompson at the school, 864-3311, to arrange pickup.
