BETHEL — The Select Board voted May 7 to award a three-year contract to Archie’s Inc. of Mexico for solid waste services.

It was the first time in several years bids were solicited for the service, and it was the lowest of three offers.

The station on Route 26 serves Bethel, Newry and Hanover.

Bethel Town Manager Sharon Jackson and Public Works Director Scott Sumner recommended the contract, which runs through June 30, 2028.

Archie’s bid was $320 per ton to haul solid waste. Casella Waste Systems headquartered in Rutland, Vermont, bid $509 per ton and 207 Waste in Poland bid $595 per ton.

Archie’s offer is for hauling transfer station waste only. The Tri-Town Solid Waste Committee voted not to pursue hauling and tipping services for places other than the facility.

“With Archie’s bid, we will pay $170 less per haul,” Jackson said. All of the tipping fees for (municipal solid waste), construction debris, recycling, metals, and shingles are less than what we are paying now. So it’s a significant savings on our budget.”

Archie’s serves 21 towns in the region.

“You’re right on our route,” company representative Jerry Amato told the Select Board at its May 7 meeting.

Jackson explained that the new contract represents just one part of a larger waste management picture.

“This is the first of three components,” she said. “The second is the tipping the town pays for everything in the Casella dumpsters that residents use. The third component is the (transfer station) scales.”

According to Jackson’s spreadsheet, savings for tipping and hauling with Archie’s is $67,138. Cost for curbside pickup and dumpsters to the three towns is $302,760. Once the town gets the scales, revenue is estimated to be $297,158.
