What do you get when you combine a beloved classic story with modern technological effects, creative choreography, unique costumes and superb acting?

You get Community Little Theatre’s current stage production “The Little Prince.”

The lights go down and the audience is immediately swept up into the whimsical world inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic story, adapted by Rick Cummings and John Scoular. “The Little Prince” is the story of a young boy who has journeyed from his home asteroid and finds himself in the desert on planet Earth.

It is here that he encounters a lone aviator desperately trying to get his little airplane flying again. As the two characters bond, we learn of the boy’s home and of his adventurous journey, while also learning valuable lessons about friendship, love and the importance of retaining the ability to see the world through a child’s eyes.

Directed by Britney Anderson, the cast of seven actors is nothing short of amazing.

Sixth grader Eliot J. Manfrim gives an astounding performance in his role as The Little Prince. He has truly captured the essence of the character and he displays it through his poise, his diction, his timing and, most of all, his ability to exude just the right emotion to draw the audience into his story and keep them hooked.

The Aviator, played by CLT veteran Tony Roy, is a complex character. He represents the creative child who gets squelched by the stress and responsibilities of adulthood. Roy is able to portray The Aviator with such sensitivity and depth that the audience is able to truly relate to both the jaded adult and the idealistic child within.

The onstage chemistry between Manfrim and Roy throughout the entire production is undeniable, which makes the entire play even more magical.

A unique aspect of this production is the dancing. The five dancers, Kevin Bolduc, Kenneth Mansur, Evelynn Lenhert, Nicole J.K. Emery and Hazel Flynn, provide a visual representation of the planets along with depicting the various individuals the prince encounters on his journey. Each dancer is talented and versatile while, collectively, they are able to tie the story together beautifully.

Of course, a magical story is not complete these days without special effects and this production does not disappoint. The audience can see the pictures being drawn in real time on The Aviator’s notepad and see the planets illuminated while the stars are shining.

The creative and notable technological effects create the perfect setting to immerse the audience even deeper into the magical story of “The Little Prince.”

The remaining performances of “The Little Prince” are May 15, 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at laclt.com or by phone at 207-783-0958. All performances are held at Community Little Theatre’s home at 30 Academy St. in Auburn.
