We fooled a number of people who incorrectly guessed places including Coos Canyon, Screw Auger Falls, Smalls Falls, and Angel Falls as this week’s Mystery Photo. However, many people correctly identified Snow Falls Gorge on the Little Androscoggin River at the rest stop on Route 26 in West Paris. Many pointed out that they recognized the shadow of the walkway over the falls in the bottom part of the photo, which helped them identify Snow Falls. According to several historical organizations, many stories are floating around about how the gorge got its name, most untrue, but all of them hinge upon speculation and lore. At the core of the most common legend, the falls were named after a man named Captain Snow. The legend has it that Snow was killed there by Native Americans around 1762. The area was, at that time, a wilderness. In a random drawing from all the correct entries, Dan Levesque of Auburn was picked as the winner of a $25 Hannaford Supermarket gift card.
