LEWISTON — A local man was in critical condition at a Portland hospital Friday after his dirt bike collided with a car Thursday night at Sabattus and College streets.
Police said Damonte Powell, 19, of Lewiston, was riding a dirt bike illegally on the street when he was struck by a car at about 10:30 p.m.
Investigators said it appears Powell was driving on Sabattus Street when he blew through a light at the intersection of College Street where he was struck.
“Preliminary findings suggest that speed, driver distraction, and failure to yield were contributing factors to the crash,” according to a police news release.
The driver of the sedan that struck Powell was not hurt and was not identified.
Powell was taken to Central Maine Medical Center before he was transferred via LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was listed in critical condition there on Friday.
Police reconstructed the crash site as part of their investigation, which was ongoing on Friday.
