AUBURN — Mistakes were made, and Hampden Academy capitalized.

The Broncos scored four times in the top of the first inning to jump-start their 11-2 win over Edward Little in Class A North baseball action Monday at Central Maine Community College.

Two Edward Little errors and an Ashton Roak single loaded the bases, and Gavin Moynok was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. A sacrifice fly, another Red Eddies error, and a Nykson Moors single brought three more runs across the plate.

“We were trying to capitalize because we have in the past left a lot of runners on base, but in today’s game, we did a lot better job getting better hits, hitting the ball a little better, putting the ball in play,” Hampden coach Jon Perry said.

How did Hampden Academy win

• The Red Eddies (4-7) made Hampden Academy (7-4) starting pitcher Kaysen Wildman work in the bottom of the inning by walking twice, and Ben DuBois got by a pitch but couldn’t score.

• Hampden Academy scored another run with help from an Edward Little error in the second. The Eddies scored both of their runs in the bottom of the second on TJ Kramarz’s two-run double cut the deficit to 5-2.

• Two more Hampden runs came across in the top of the third on a fielder’s choice and an error. Wildman added to the lead with a RBI double in the fourth, and Josh Lorenzo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home another run for a 9-2 lead. An Isaac Leamer groundout brought home a 10th run, and the 11th came on Jack Kelley’s sac fly in the top of the seventh.

• Meanwhile, Wildman faced only nine Edward Little batters from the fourth through sixth innings.

“It’s just that once I get that first-strike confidence and stuff like that, it’s just a roll. It just rolls downhill, and I just keep rolling with it. It just strikes, man,” Wildman said.

They said it

• “We’ve got to get a little bit better with the two-out hitting, and we’ve got to support our pitchers. I thought our pitchers actually threw pretty well at times today. We just allowed free bases, and we’ve got to get better with that. But, you know, the season’s starting to creep to a close soon, so we’ll have to figure things out soon.” — Edward Little coach Dave Jordan

“Those insurance runs, I mean, it’s a big difference. You pitch differently with a lead, and it just feels good to have a team that will hit and help me out every once in a while.” — Kaysen Wildman

“Cole Levesque came up, got a nice hit (in the seventh), and he hit the ball hard the other way, which I was proud of him coming off the bench and doing that. We just need more guys to kind of have that approach of trying to hit the ball hard the other way and base and stuff.” — Dave Jordan
