Braiden Croteau pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts, and Sacopee Valley edged Monmouth Academy 4-3 in a meeting of Class C South baseball contenders Thursday in Hiram.

Two of the three runs against Croteau were unearned. He issued only one walk.

Croteau, Bryce Stacey and Silas Nielsen each drove in a run for the reigning state champions (7-4).

Rory Foyt hit a double for Monmouth (8-3), which had its six-game win streak snapped but is still ranked No. 1 in the Class C South Heal point standings. Sacopee Valley is currently sixth in the region.

MT. ABRAM 14, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 12: Three big offensive innings were enough for the Roadrunners (9-2) to overcome the Seagulls’ 12-run, 14-hit performance in Salem Township.

Mt. Abram scored five runs in the bottom of the first, five in the third and four in the fourth.

The Roadrunners tallied eight hits and drew 11 walks. Bryce Wilcox drove in three runs and had one hit, while Ash Rollins doubled and singled, Brennan Mitchell singled twice and scored three runs, and Eben Laliberte had two RBI.

Old Orchard Beach’s (6-5) Trot Moody finished with three hits, scored four runs and drove in two runs. Wesley Gallant, Aiden Hodgkins and Caleb Aube had two hits apiece, and Kooper Gervais doubled for the Seagulls’ lone extra-base hit.

SOFTBALL

DIRIGO 11, SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 1: Madisyn Bradeen doubled and drove in four runs as the Cougars (7-3) earned their seventh straight win by beating the Phoenix (6-5) in six innings in Dixfield.

Hannah Hamner led Dirigo with four hits, while Emily Woods (double), Aleiah Ward (triple) and Abby Luczynski each contributed two hits, and Lana Waite hit a triple.

Cougars pitcher Leah Turnbull improved to 3-0 with a five-inning effort. She and Lana Waite (one inning) combined on a two-hitter.

Santika Hodgkin had both of Spruce Mountain’s hits.

MONMOUTH ACADEMY 15, WINTHROP/MARANACOOK 1: Shannah Parsons hit two home runs and earned the win in the circle as the Mustangs (11-0) beat the Winthrop/Maranacook co-op (2-8) in a five-inning game at Kents Hill School in Readfield.

Parsons allowed one hit and struck out nine. Riley Smith had three hits and drove in five runs for Monmouth.

Ella Rice hit a home run for Winthrop/Maranacook.
