I agree with the May 17 letter to the editor about the importance of not removing rails to make the Merrymeeting Trail.

Land transportation efficiency increases from cars to buses and trucks to rail being the most efficient. This causes the carbon footprint to be reduced proportionately.

Positives that Steven didn’t mention include that passengers on trains can read, nap, relax, enjoy wonderful scenery, toilet facilities, dining, beverages and comfortable seating. Train commuters can also charge their electronic devices, use Wi-Fi to perform personal or work-related chores and not waste time and money driving (minimize carbon footprint). As Maine moves forward, more affordable housing could be a train ride away.

I encourage Mainers to not close the door to expanding rail service and public transit matrix throughout the state and beyond. A trail parallel to an active railroad system is an acceptable option.
