I want to thank and compliment Victoria Hugo-Vidal on her very informative column on May 18 regarding the Digital Equity Act and how important its programs are to rural Maine. This act was included in a bipartisan infrastructure bill signed into law under the Biden administration. The bill included programs to improve high-speed internet and technology access to rural Maine (these programs are long overdue). The president has decided that this act is “unconstitutional,” “racist,” etc., and is cutting it.
As Victoria pointed out, these programs are investments, like any education or infrastructure is an investment. “Racist”? Maine is 94% white. To those who missed reading this column, I would highly recommend checking it out. There are so many Mainers who would have benefited from this bill.
