Peaks Island is a unique ecosystem. As such, it functions best when its remarkable residents’ achievements and community actions are acknowledged by the wider Portland community, as well as when its residents speak openly about concerns and oversights that affect this beautiful slip of land.
A recent short article in your paper gave a cursory overview of Casco Bay Lines’ intent to raise its rates significantly for islanders and visitors beyond what is economically sustainable, but neglected to state that a petition with 289 signatures was submitted to the Finance Committee, and 73% of the comments from residents addressed to the Casco Bay Lines Board of Directors registered opposition to the new proposed rates.
This information should be included in any public discussion of the ongoing dialogue between islanders and the Casco Bay Lines Board of Directors.
