LEWISTON — Officials at Covenant Health, which owns St. Mary’s Health System, disconnected from all of its hospitals’ data systems Monday due to a “cyber incident,” according to a statement by spokesperson Karen Sullivan. This includes systems used by Community Clinical Services.

Irregularities impacting connectivity across the organization were detected, prompting the decision, the statement said. Though Community Clinical Services became independent of St. Mary’s last year, it is still using Covenant’s server, CEO Coleen Elias said.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we immediately discontinued access to all data systems in our hospitals, clinics and provider practices,” she said.

The incident was initiated by an outside group, Sullivan said. The Catholic-based organization is working with outside parties to determine exactly what happened and to get its computer systems restored.

Covenant also owns St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, which also reported a system outage, and St. Andre Health Care in Biddeford. It also owns a nursing home in Lewiston and Bangor.

In the meantime, patients are encouraged to keep their appointments and call their provider’s office with questions, Sullivan said. More information will be released as the situation progresses. There is no estimated time for resolution.

Community Clinical Services should also attend scheduled appointments and can call the office to make new appointments, refill medications or ask questions, Elias said.

“Call wait times and response times may be delayed due to some work-flow changes that require extra time, but patient care continues to be our priority,” she said.
